Why commercial air travel has become so expensive, annoying, and cramped

A recent government report outlines the changes in commercial aviation since 2001:

If you think it’s gotten harder to fly from here to there, you’re not imagining things. Quite apart from the added layers of annoyance created by the Transportation Security Administration, airlines simply don’t fly to as many places as they once did. According to the government report, the number of flights of less than 250 miles plunged 24 percent between June 2007 and June 2012. The number of flights between 250 and 499 miles fell 16 percent.

Chinese Private Aviation Grows 43% in 2012

Privation aviation is growing rapidly in China this year.

According to figures released this week, Shanghai has seen something of a private jet boom in the past year, with Pudong and Hongqiao airports handling 2,700 private jets in the first eight months of 2012, a 43 percent rise in traffic year-over-year. As George Lu of the Shanghai Hawker Pacific Business Aviation Service Center told a press conference this week, ”More Chinese are buying business jets as the mainland market has entered a rapid growth period, just as that of the civil aviation market in the country 10 years ago.”

Airlines tumble 31% in 2011; outlook cloudy

The airline industry has rarely operated in profit, but 2011 was a bad year. The next year is not looking much better.

Airline stocks on ended a rough year deep in the red on Friday as sputtering demand and soaring fuel prices squeezed the industry’s profits, and 2012 is expected to be just as challenging.

We are inspired by Abraham Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg address:

This principle should be applied to the world of aviation. Routes should be determined by the travelers. The time of departure and the type of aircraft should be agreed by the people taking the trip.
